In the public relations profession, blogging and social media can help you get a job. I mean a long with having great writing skills. In one of the article that I read by Mark Schaefer, he says, "blogging as a way to get ahead-in almost any career." True? Yes, I believe so. Blogging not only help improve your writing skills but your creativity in thinking. Most jobs these days requires writing skills because there are so much paper work that needs to be process on a daily basis. Anyways, here are 7 reasons why job seeker should blog.
1. Show what you're made of! When blogging, blog about everything at your interest! In most interviews, you usually tell employees that you can perform multiple tasks. In a blog, you can show them. To the end, blog about current events that is happening. Blogging helps show others that you're able to develop and demonstrate ideas in such areas.
2. Build a professional network. Professional networking is not easy. To this day, I'm still struggling with it. However blogging through out the community can become a professional network. In addition, there are other ways to build a professional network other than blogging, such as Twitting, Facebooking, LinkedIn, and vloging on Youtube.
3. Engage instead of advertise. Engaging is very important! Compelling content is a way to engage propective employers in a way that will hold their attention.
4. Stand out. Nowadays, standing out in a crowd can be tough and blogging can be an expectation for many jobs. Try to be different but at the same time, be yourself. Put yourself out there and demonstrate your ability and creativity. This will help you in the long run, such as job search!
5. Sharpen your professional skills. Stay on top of things! Most people find this difficult to do because of time management, but you must be careful because it's not an easy task to do. Also try to be a head of yourself or the game, this is a challenge but will help a lot in the long run.
6. Expand your reach. Connections!!!! Like said, building a network is not easy but once you get the habit of it, it will make your job easier and help expand your business.
7. Extending the interview. "I've enjoyed our time together but there is so much more I tell you about my abilities. I hope you'll take a look at my blog (the website address is on my resume) so you can see for yourself the way I think about things." - Mark Schaefer. He says towards the end of the interview, you should let me know about your social network such as blogs online. They'll look at it; all you have to do is extend your interview by another 15 to 30 mins.
